Gary Strobel, PhD. - Science Advisory Board

Senior professor (Emeritus, still employed), Montana State University, Department of Plant Sciences. Gary’s entire career has been dedicated to a study of the associations of microbes with higher plants. His research has resulted in numerous original contributions in many fields including biochemistry, microbiology, plant science, plant pathology, pharmaceutical chemistry, microbial genetics, and toxin research. He has published over 330 scientific papers in these respective fields and has served on numerous federal review panels, lectured on his research all over the world, and has been extensively involved in patent development and licensing. Some specific examples of work from his lab include the discovery of Muscodor albus, the gas-emitting microbe that is being developed by AgraQuest as a methyl bromide alternative, discovery of fungal-taxol, the discovery and characterization of the pseudomycins (licensed to Eli Lilly) and other bioactive molecules such as oocydin A, cryptocandin, and cryptocin (licensed to HMV of San Diego). His B.S. work was in Botany at Colorado State University in 1960 and a Ph.D. in plant pathology for UC-Davis in 1963.
